Whisked Away at Whisk Crepes Cafe

Whisk Crepes Cafe – 4.5 Stars My first experience with crepes came by way of the 24 hour Dallas eatery, Buzzbrews and their Flying Chicken Crepe. Ideal for a first time “creper”, it is a mixture of fresh spinach, tomato, onion and portabella mushrooms pan sautéed with marinated grilled chicken, rolled into a homemade crepe with mozzarella cheese, then topped off with poblano cream sauce. Eventually my infatuation with this crepe ran its course. In search of another crepe experience, I was none too thrilled about the eggy or sugar filled small thin pancakes that so often appeared on breakfast and brunch menus. And so, the search ended. Then a…

Brunch with a Soundtrack at Sambuca’s Uptown

Sambuca’s Uptown – 3.7 Stars Blackened shrimp and grits with a side of sax. Paired with a few mimosas, it’s not a bad way to enjoy your food. With their latest menu, Sambuca’s Uptown is providing a soundtrack to the weekend’s most beloved meal. Don’t expect a lot of fills when it comes to the brunch selections at Sambuca’s. For the most part, this menu gets straight to the point with house made granola parfaits, eggs benedict and breakfast tacos. Those looking for a little twist to the classics will also get their fix. Take a roll in sugar with the Bananas Foster French Toast, which is made with…

The Second Slay at GAPCo

With their second location, Greenville Avenue Pizza Company has effectively snatched up the pizza cravings of the folks in East Dallas. Like their original location, the new GAPCo continues to slay with their infamous Pizza Slayers. Everything here is made fresh, from scratch daily. Get pesto wasted with the Pesto Sciutto, a welcoming marriage of prosciutto, roma tomatoes, arugula, fresh garlic, and sundried tomatoes. The pie is finished off with pizza crack and parmesan. Cheese lovers will find immediate harmony with the Five Cheese Pizza, a generous mix of stringy mozzarella, feta, parmesan, goat cheese, ricotta and oregano. Few pizza joints can deliver on more than just pie. There’s…

A Look at Las Perlas in Austin

Las Perlas 5 Stars $-$$ Mezcal is not for everyone. It’s made for the brave. It’s made for those with tongues built for smoky rendezvous and bellies that burn with liquid fire. It is unique. But, the truth is you’re not always in the mood for a smoky tongue or a burning belly, which is why I was skeptical about visiting Las Perlas. Recently opened on 403 E. 7th Street in Austin, it’s the second Las Perlas location, and the first in Texas. The concept comes courtesy of the LA based 213 Hospitality, also the crafty creators of Half Step and Seven Grand Whiskey Bar. Las Perlas offers a uniquely…

Don’t Tell Supper Club, The Experience

Don’t Tell Supper Club – 4.7 Stars Pull a sword from a man’s throat. Watch in awe as people go through rings and suspend themselves in curtains aka aerial performances. Sip on a cocktail aptly named Green Eggs and Ham then let your fork slip into tender Smoked Yellowtail Sashimi. This isn’t someplace you need a plane to get to. But, it is an escape from the norm. Don’t Tell Supper Club isn’t your average night out in Dallas. Tucked away in Downtown Dallas, from the outside, there’s really nothing too assuming about Don’t Tell. Open Thursday through Saturday night, this place easily blends into the fabric of buildings surrounding…

Itis Occurs During Soul Food Truck Fest

Beef tips and rice, fried chicken, catfish and collard greens. Surprisingly, that’s not the menu for your grandmother’s famous Sunday dinner. On September 30th Austin, Texas kicked off their first ever Soul Food Truck Festival. With grub from a variety of the city’s best soul food trucks, event goers made their way the Freedom Plaza at the Carver Museum to get their fill of #itis. This year’s food trucks included Down South Texas BBQ, My Granny’s Kitchen, Krab Kingz, Khandie’s Shaved Ice, The Hashburg and Krack of Dawn Donuts. Each location had their fair share of lengthy lines, but appetites seemed especially enthused by the Rolling Rooster. While…

Greek Food Festival 2017 Recap

Already stuffed from the spinach and cheese inside crispy phyllo, aka spanakopita and seasoned dolmas, I still yearned for another gyro. Just as I began waddling closer to the stand, I realized this belly could handle no more Greek goodness. For the 62nd year, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church put on the Greek Food Festival of Dallas. The three day long festivities included dancing, music, shopping and absolutely mouthwatering Greek food. The food. There’s so much to say about the food. It tastes like spending the weekend inside the kitchen of your sweet little Greek grandmother and being fed loads of love by the forkfuls. Some of the tantalizing…

A Roll with Angry Egg Roll

Angry Egg Roll 4.5 Stars $ There are times that you just need more, and it’s just not big enough. Not only is it not big enough, but you just wish it would last longer. Those are typically my thoughts when eating an egg roll.  If you find yourself late in Austin and roaming 7th Street and Red River then go ahead and get your roll on a big way.  Though there are only two options on the food truck menu, Angry Egg Roll has that simplistic, greasy, crispy perfection egg rollovers appreciate. Choose from The Drunken Master, your classic “probably pork” Cantonese egg roll or go veggie with The…

A Conversation with UCE Founder Bryan Townsend

It’s OK to lose your inhibitions as long as you’re safe, and it’s for a good cause. Returning for their sixth year, the Ultimate Cocktail Experience is set to wet whistles on September 30th.  Once again, this charitable event will benefit Triggers for Toys, helping to bring together brand distributors, incredible bartenders and consumers for an evening of innovative cocktails. Raising over $200,000 last year the organization was created to help in reducing the financial burdens of chronically ill children. This year, UCE will keep the cocktails flowing with six unique bar concepts that will represent different parts of the world. Bartenders must show off their skills and produce one…
