Most Beloved Bites of 2019

As the year comes to an end, I can say that it was filled with being full. Whether I was cracking crabs, tearing up some tacos or devouring my lifespan in sushi, this year brought me plenty of delectable and noteworthy dishes. Here are a few of my favorite bites from the year that was 2019. Bam’s Vegan, Shrimp and Sausage Nachos There are some things so good that you may find yourself searching for them in the daytime with a flashlight, and the Shrimp and Sausage Nachos from Bam’s Vegan meets that criteria. Though I am not a vegan, Brandon Waller, owner of Bam’s Vegan and his incredibly dedicated…

After a few temperamental teases, colder weather is finally gracing Dallas with its presence. Going Totally Texan and Tacos at By the Horns Brewing

The greatest tacos ever to grace a greasy shell in DFW are almost always found inside an unsuspecting gas station. This is Texan knowledge 101. It goes in the same handbook that requires Texans to love anything dealing with longhorns, brews, queso, margaritas and recently, Topo Chico. By the Horns Brewing has not only read this handbook, they’ve turned it into doctrine. Located in Mansfield, By the Horns Brewing is the latest brainchild of Chef Jason Boso. He’s the man behind the comfort food classic concepts, Twisted Root Burger, (there’s also one next door) and the forever bustling Truck Yard. Some who’ve spent a little time chasing cheesesteaks and…

Whisked Away at Whisk Crepes Cafe

Whisk Crepes Cafe – 4.5 Stars My first experience with crepes came by way of the 24 hour Dallas eatery, Buzzbrews and their Flying Chicken Crepe. Ideal for a first time “creper”, it is a mixture of fresh spinach, tomato, onion and portabella mushrooms pan sautéed with marinated grilled chicken, rolled into a homemade crepe with mozzarella cheese, then topped off with poblano cream sauce. Eventually my infatuation with this crepe ran its course. In search of another crepe experience, I was none too thrilled about the eggy or sugar filled small thin pancakes that so often appeared on breakfast and brunch menus. And so, the search ended. Then a…

Itis Occurs During Soul Food Truck Fest

Beef tips and rice, fried chicken, catfish and collard greens. Surprisingly, that’s not the menu for your grandmother’s famous Sunday dinner. On September 30th Austin, Texas kicked off their first ever Soul Food Truck Festival. With grub from a variety of the city’s best soul food trucks, event goers made their way the Freedom Plaza at the Carver Museum to get their fill of #itis. This year’s food trucks included Down South Texas BBQ, My Granny’s Kitchen, Krab Kingz, Khandie’s Shaved Ice, The Hashburg and Krack of Dawn Donuts. Each location had their fair share of lengthy lines, but appetites seemed especially enthused by the Rolling Rooster. While…

A Glimpse at Taziki’s

Taziki’s 4 Stars Fried, frozen and microwaved. Those aren’t forms of cooking that you’ll be privy to tasting when visiting Taziki’s Café. With their latest franchise in Plano, the healthy Mediterranean eatery is serving up plenty of delicious healthy options. Most notable are the chicken roll ups, grilled shrimp with their tender taters, and the spicy pimento cheese. What to Order – The Grilled Shrimp Feast which is served with either delicious roasted new potatoes or basmati rice and Greek salad. The shrimp is seasoned and grilled with lemon juice, butter and just a touch of blackened seasoning. Promise not to skip out on the baklava. Where to find…

T Blancos is a Taste of the Unexpected

T Blancos, 4.3 Stars Bite after bite, there was one word that kept coming to mind after diving fork first into each dish: Unexpected. From frozen Crown and Cokes to their apple slaw laced in cilantro, poblano peppers and zesty lime, T Blancos is definitely here to make taste buds ponder. For their second location, T Blancos decided to go big in Addison. They occupy the building that once belonged to popular lounge and restaurant, Button’s. The space was completely revitalized, there’s even talks of adding an upstairs patio. Having never visited T Blancos’ original location in Lakeport, Texas, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the eatery. Still, I…

Escape to Tortaco

Tortaco – 4 Stars   miling and holding a half empty bottle Alejandro said, “There is an old saying in Mexico.” Handing over a slip of paper it read, “For all that’s wrong mezcal, and for all that is right as well.” Taking in another drink of my tonic, I quickly realized this saying was likely doctrine. Appearing more like a cozy ravenous dungeon than a restaurant, Tortaco is an escape from the “norm” when it comes to Mexican style cuisine in Dallas. Their menu does not boast margaritas, enchiladas and the Tex-Mex must, queso. Instead, you’ll find an assortment of delicious soft flour tortilla tacos, tortas, bowls and…
