Taco Libre

Heat and humidity, don’t have a shot in hell at deterring a Texan from a taco. The first annual Taco Libre festival seemed to bring out the entire city of Dallas and then some. The event started at 2PM, but even before that, the line began wrapping around the corner to get inside. Sadly, not everyone was able to partake in the festivities, as the event ended up completely selling out. Those who did make it past the gate were tempted with a number of taco options. A few of my personal favorites included the seasoned soft and tender barbacoa taco from Chile Pepper Grill in Fort Worth. A tongue blazing chile relano taco from El Padrino, and a slow cooked beef number that made my stomach happy from La Nortena.

Drinks were another ordeal all together. On average a beer ran you about $6 and tequila infused drinks like my pretty blue Coconut Crusher were $12. While drinking and munching during the event, they kept the entertainment coming, complete with several rounds of luchadores wrestling and a number of musical talents that graced the stage.

Aside from a number of long lines and unforgivable heat, the first annual Taco Libre celebration was great. Personally I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they upgrade to a larger location next year. But even if they don’t the reality is the street taco love in this town is so serious, people would stand on top of each other’s heads just to get that $2 fix of seasoned meat, fresh onions, cilantro, verde salsa and a squeeze of lime all wrapped up in a greasy corn tortilla.
