Vagabond-Rated 3.75 Stars txMB

Climaxing at the corner of famished and crazy I decided to treat myself to a wee bit of happiness hour. The evenings escape came in the form of the almost one year old eatery Vagabond. Located on lower Greenville, I’d seen this place before with its beautiful dancing flames outside that always illicit romantic feelings. Beyond that, the name is pretty cool.

Moscow Mule VagabondInside, there were only a few souls, so I grabbed a seat at the bar. The bar is good sized, filled with plenty of different elixirs and an awesome man behind the booze named Mr. Salomon. More about his concoctions later. The menu isn’t large, but they do offer some twists on a few typical bar foods. Hence my desire to partake in the pork wings with cabbage slaw and the duck fat steak fries. I mean c’mon when you hear of something called pork wings, you kind of have to find out more. Waiting at the bar for my new foodie adventure, I sipped down a $5 Moscow Mule. Soon after taking on the mule it was time to get in on those things called pork wings. They are served four to a plate, coated in a somewhat sweet sauce that hints at a plum sauce flair. The side serving of cabbage slaw is extra creamy and I genuinely love it. But, be warned, if you do not like super creamy slaw, you will not like this.

I haven’t decided yet, but duck fat fries might be the only way to cook fries. Thickly cut potatoes are fried in standard cooking oil, tossed in duck fat, then tossed again in a delicious mix of fresh cilantro, thyme and tiny chunks of fresh garlic. The outer layer is crunch city, while the inside of the tator is smooth and velvety. Pork wings and duck fat fries

edited seasonal smashAfter eating I was treated to another one of Mr. Salomon’s divine sips and it tasted exactly like Christmas and any winter wonderland that you could have ever wanted to throw snowballs in. I know the holidays are over, but secretly, you’ve got to miss all of that. Seasonal Smash is a sweet and tangy mix of fresh baked apple, cinnamon, mint and booze. Honestly I could drink about 30 of these and feel just as guiltless as if I was drinking water.

So, is Vagabond worth a return trip? Yes. I would definitely return for the duck fat steak fries that extra creamy slaw and pretty much any drink Mr. Salomon decides to concoct. TxMB

That whole parking thing-Well guys, I lucked up getting to lower Greenville before 6PM on a Thursday night. There are a few spots in front of Vagabond and you may also be able to find street parking. If you’re really gotta have it, there is always valet. Oh how we love our valet in this city.
