Usually, I prefer for my avocado and tequila to keep a respectable distance. They may go to the same party, but they have different friends. One kicks it hardcore with tortilla chips, while the other is best buds with shot glasses, and limes.  So, when I heard that there was an avocado margarita being served at Cantina Laredo I immediately thought a line was crossed? What were these two doing canoodling together?

Happily this is a love affair that works. Recently launched at all Cantina Laredo’s, I decided to test out this new concoction at the 32-year-old Addison location. The margarita is made with 1800 Añejo Tequila with Midori Melon Liqueur, lime juice and extra smooth fresh avocado, complete with a Himalayan salt rim. At first glance I was still a little apprehensive, mostly because of the deep green avocado color. So, before sipping I chatted with Mr. Rambo, the manager and head chef for 10 years. “It has a very Mexican feel to it and the tequila and avocado really complement each other,” he explained. Created by the beverage director of the restaurant, Cantina Laredo knows a thing or two about the magic of avocados. The long standing eatery was one of the first to start making tableside guacamole.

But back to the beverage. The texture is smooth and velvety but not as a thick as a smoothie. The flavor profile selectively captures each note within the tequila while playfully finishing with a subtly sweet creamy lime gusto. Although it was lighter than anticipated, the unusual tequila cocktail is still fairly filling.

The avocado margarita will grace Cantina Laredo for a limited time. I’d say it’s definitely worth a try. Cheers to a new healthy relationship. txMB
