Be Mine Red Velvet Valentine-Rush Patisserie-The Velvety Finale

Rush Patisserie-Rated 4 stars TXMB [dropcap coloI[/dropcap]t all started as a joke and ended with teeny spoons tied around cutesy thick glass jars. One joke spawned an order of 1500 that ended up shipping across the United States. And just like that the cupcake that never was went from chuckles to cash. The Un-Cupcake is the sweet wit of Samantha Rush, owner of Rush Patisserie, Pastry Boutique and Cake Salon. A French style Bakery, Rush has plenty of exquisite desserts, including macaroons, tarts, wedding cakes and of course the Un-Cupcake. It comes in several flavors, but most Dallas folks are coming in for the red velvet. If you ask Samantha,…

The Uncle of all Sammiches

Uncle Uber’s- Rated 4.5 stars TXmb [dropcap color=”red-vibrant” font=”georgia” style=”normal” size=”scmgc-4em”]T[/dropcap]urkey Sandwich. You’ve been doing it wrong. For years you’ve been doing it wrong. When you put the words turkey and sandwich together your mouth should break into spas grins, otherwise you’ve been doing it wrong. Thank goodness for an Uncle that teaches us the error in our ways. Uncle Uber’s is a place dedicated to righting the wrongs of bread, meat, bread. Here they take your sandwich knowledge, flip it, fry it, blacken it, cheese it, avocado it, and bacon it until it becomes a Sammich. Like the Smokin Turkey, or a turkey sandwich re-imagined. A Wok on the Moon at Moon Wok

Moon Wok-Rated 3 Stars Ten bucks. That’s the limit. I folded my little loot, bounced in Old Blue and met my pals at Moon Wok. Arriving a few minutes before them, I took a gander around this place. Not too shabby, but teetering closer to a hole in a wall than a palace. It’s about the food not the ambiance. A massive version of their menu covers one stretch of wall. I grabbed a seat at the booth right above the huge menu. Reading it, I grinned with glee. I tucked at the wrinkled bill in my coat and realized I had more than enough for a feast. Once my…

What’s Pho Breakfast?

Vietnam Restaurant Bar and Grill- 4.5 stars  Teeny tiny shorts, my most awesomest UT sweatshirt, and shin splitting tennis shoes were my attire of choice for lightly jogging in 40 degree weather. Pushing little by little just to get through a couple of miles, I stared down at my freezing cold thighs and immediately craved something warm. It had been months, and the need was getting to be a bit much. Hustling through the two miles, I hoped in Old Blue, and headed down Bryan Street. When the rest of Dallas is pushing eggs and bacon to hungered breakfast goers at 9 AM, Vietnam is serving pho. You can imagine…

Making it Work at Work

Work. – 4 Stars Work has never been a word that makes me beam. It often puts me in a frenzy of phrases such as: Let’s just listen to Stevie Wonder and smile instead. Do I have too? That’s the worst idea there ever was. I don’t want to do that. Eventually, after a mental shake up, and acceptance I begin to work. Thankfully, none of what you just read applies to this story. Standing out like something that stands out, Work. caught my eye immediately. I think it was the backwards “R” in the title that made me wonder. Traipsing about Deep Ellum one fun filled buzzed weekend I…

Cheap Thrill? Look No Further than El Rey Del Grill

Lunch 15 rolled around, and my coworker and I got a hankering for something. Something meaty, something cheesy. Off we went, allowing our desires for meat and cheese to lead the way. We ended up at a tiny joint called El Rey Del Grill. The place is about as unassuming as they come. It’s not the prettiest domain about town, but ugliness has never come between me and my food. Pictures of various dishes lined the outside of the building, displaying for all to see what “comida” they had to offer. We entered. Inside we are greeted with more pictures of their offerings, along with prices. Looking over the walled…

Benny’s Bagels has Lox of Love to Give

Benny’s Bagels- 5 Stars TXmb When a girl is denied the glory of bagels and lox in her life something awful happens. She becomes obsessive. Searching high and low, she attempts to satisfy the cravings with not so great versions of a classic. Led by discontent, she finds herself booking the next flight to NYC. It is clear the plight for bagels and lox is real. Saturday morning came and went like it always does. Once the afternoon rolled around my stomach and brain initiated a conversation on bagels and lox. Together they shouted in dramatic dismay. The only real solution was Einstein Bros. A chain. They’d let me down…
