Last Sunday Soul Sip at Perna’s Cajun & Soul Food

Recently moving to a new location in Arlington, Perna’s Cajun & Soul Food is a place filled with good vibes. Last Sunday, food blogger and founder of Starving on a Budget, Dalila Thomas hosted the Last Sunday Soul Sip, a monthly brunch that will be held at Perna’s new location. While surrounded by the gorgeous art of artist Derrick D-Dub, owner of Let’s Paint w/Kinfolks Art Studio and live music, guests got a glimpse and a taste of Perna’s new menu. From fried catfish to collard greens and pork chops, check out the goodness going on at Perna’s. $-$$ 2304 W Park Row Dr. #25, Arlington, TX. 76013

Don’t Knock Next Door

Next Door Skimming through your standard bar menu “fried” is known to make a few appearances. It typically shares the spotlight with wings, cheese, burgers, and on extra special occasions, calamari. While I’ve always had an affinity for the usual suspects, it’s nice to see a new cast member every now and again. Enter, Next Door. Located on one of the busiest streets in Uptown, Mc Kinney Ave, it may take a few minutes to find Next Door. It’s not a sign that gives it away, but a large gold door knocker perched near the roof. Upon entrance into the two story lounge, you’ll notice it’s just one of many…

So This is What Sustainability Tastes Like

The day that tomato skins are made into storage bins is finally here thanks to Ford Motors. This past Wednesday the popular car company hosted a unique happy hour, with menu items highlighting many of the sustainable materials used throughout their lineup of vehicles. Hosted at the organic Mudhen Meat and Greens, it only made sense that Chef Suki Otsuki be tapped to craft the special menu. Items featured during the mixer were made with soy beans, coconut, wheat, tomatoes and dandelion greens, all of which help in creating different parts Ford vehicles. For example, dandelion greens are currently being researched as a more sustainable resource for rubber that could…

How to AM with Two Bosses

Anything happening before 2PM on a Saturday or Sunday means morning in my mind. The best part of those “mornings” are the many edible options this town so lovingly has to offer. For a moment in time, mimosas flow like water and breakfast tacos of all kinds become your tried and true dogma. We refer to these magical hours as brunch. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to join the brunch bandwagon in this city. Competition is steep, but Dos Jefes is attempting to pull this thing off. Previously known as the popular eatery, Nick and Sams Grill Uptown, owners Joseph Palladino and Nate Paul have completely revised the…

The Chicken of Brick and Bones

Brick and Bones Rated 4.5 Stars It’s 1:45 in the morning. You’ve just finished up some intense butt bouncing, shoulder shaking and side stepping. At this point your smooth moves have seen the best of the evening and your stomach is beginning to do a jig of its own. But this belly boogie is fried chicken specific. Good news for your tummy it has a new home. In case you’ve missed it in the past 2 to 3 years, Deep Ellum has really began to come back to life. New blood, booze and businesses now line several of its most active streets including Main, and Elm. Elm seems to have…

Venturing to Vagabond

Vagabond-Rated 3.75 Stars txMB Climaxing at the corner of famished and crazy I decided to treat myself to a wee bit of happiness hour. The evenings escape came in the form of the almost one year old eatery Vagabond. Located on lower Greenville, I’d seen this place before with its beautiful dancing flames outside that always illicit romantic feelings. Beyond that, the name is pretty cool. Inside, there were only a few souls, so I grabbed a seat at the bar. The bar is good sized, filled with plenty of different elixirs and an awesome man behind the booze named Mr. Salomon. More about his concoctions later. The menu isn’t large,…

Making it Work at Work

Work. – 4 Stars Work has never been a word that makes me beam. It often puts me in a frenzy of phrases such as: Let’s just listen to Stevie Wonder and smile instead. Do I have too? That’s the worst idea there ever was. I don’t want to do that. Eventually, after a mental shake up, and acceptance I begin to work. Thankfully, none of what you just read applies to this story. Standing out like something that stands out, Work. caught my eye immediately. I think it was the backwards “R” in the title that made me wonder. Traipsing about Deep Ellum one fun filled buzzed weekend I…
