Work. – 4 Stars

Work has never been a word that makes me beam. It often puts me in a frenzy of phrases such as: Let’s just listen to Stevie Wonder and smile instead. Do I have too? That’s the worst idea there ever was. I don’t want to do that. Eventually, after a mental shake up, and acceptance I begin to work. Thankfully, none of what you just read applies to this story.

Standing out like something that stands out, Work. caught my eye immediately. I think it was the backwards “R” in the title that made me wonder. Traipsing about Deep Ellum one fun filled buzzed weekend I could not help but notice the long black and white building. Once entering an immediate sense of comfort fell over me. Something about this place, the entryway portion is relaxing, almost like someone’s fancy massive country porch. After taking that in along with the delicious scent of meat being smoked, my desire led me straight to the bar. I was presented with an old folder for a menu.

It was time to order. I settled on the bacon wrapped prawns because everyone knows how important bacon is to anyone. Meanwhile, it was happy hour, so I sipped on a $3.00 vodka soda and chatted it up with a wonderful couple. This was not their first time at Work. but their confidence in the food put away any silent doubts that may have existed. They suggested the pulled pork and brisket. I vowed to try those allegedly wondrous food items on my next visit.

The moment of truth. Was this going to Work. (I did it again). The dish was beautiful and even caused my new found friends to pause in enchantment. First bite. Second bite. Ten bites.

I can attest to you that it did in fact work. The delicious blending of potatoes so smooth they were almost sauce like, juicy mushrooms and large shrimp covered bacon was quite divine. There’s an understated sweet sauce that complemented the dish perfectly. I would however ask them to cook the bacon a little longer though. But this is minor. The dish ran me about $15 and a tiny to go container.

Next time you’re in Deep Ellum give Work. a try. It’s cool inside, the people are nice and the food is appetizing. Work. is unquestionably a job well done. TXMB
