Once a year locals around this state take a vow to engulf their taste buds in the deep fried pleasures that can only be found at the State Fair of Texas. Among the most common of these pleasantries are corny dogs and to a lesser extent French fries. With their addition of two new menu items, Plano based Sea Breeze is adding their own seafood spin on these two fair favorites.

Sea Breeze is a place that has an ease about itself. It’s not a fru fru, pretentious seafood restaurant, but somewhere patrons feel like regulars. A small but fully stocked bar sits to one corner of the restaurant and at the other end, a long case filled with gorgeous fresh seafood. According to owner Rick Oruch who believes in eating seafood at least 2 to 3 times per week, “The idea here is to come in and dine with us one night, get your fresh fish the next night, and then kind of roll the dice on that third night.

Besides his shrimp, which comes from the gulf, none of Rick’s seafood is imported.

Open for nearly ten years, Sea Breeze has won over many a bellies with their lobster roll which is said to be the best in DFW. Besides being stuffed with lush lobster, Rick says it’s all about the bun. “It costs more to ship the bun than the actual bun,” he explained. Another top seller here is their clam chowder.

Creamy, spicy lobster cheese fries are incredible. We’re in a serious relationship now.

While chatting with Rick about his establishment, Richard, one of the bartenders fixed up a specialty cocktail called the Summer of Napa. Maybe you’re thinking it’s a little late in the season to fall gulp first for summer inspired booze, but you’d be wrong. Made with rum, egg whites, grapefruit juice, lime juice and grapefruit bitters created in small batch from Napa, it’s not for those who prefer their drinks sweet. The deep aroma of grapefruit dances off the glass the moment it’s placed in front of you. Egg whites add a frothy top layer, while the rum and lime work together in providing a ghostly sweetness, it exists in spirit alone.

But, on to the two main attractions of the evening: Spicy Lobster Cheese Fries and Corn Dog Shrimp. The fries are thin to medium sized, fried to a nice golden brown and topped with creamy, spicy, bisque cheese and a few ounces of lobster. Forking down, you notice, they remain crisp without giving way to sogginess. Bite one=addiction. Lobster Cheese Fries taste like guilt free adult cheese fries with sass.

Next up, the Corn Dog Shrimp. After watching an episode of Diners, Dive Ins and Drives, Rick was inspired to cook up his own version of this unique dish. Fried perfectly, the shrimp has that familiar cornmeal battered sweetness similar to our one and only Fletcher’s Corny Dog, only not as heavy. The shrimp could easily stand alone, but the Avocado Crema and Chipotle Aioli served with it only add another layer of greatness.

Without question, I will return to this fresh seafood joint. The Spicy Lobster Cheese Fries and Corn Dog Shrimp are reason enough alone, though they will only be available for a limited time. Guess that means, I’ll have to return for clam chowder one day, a lobster roll the next, and day three is a roll of the dice. TXmB
